Residential Trash Service
Grayson County provides weekly trash service to residence of the County. The day of your trash collection depends on where you are located in the County.
Residents are limited to 4 garbage bags of trash OR 4 containers, the containers can not be over 32 gallons.
Bins constructed to house containers MUST NOT be over (32″) Thirty Two Inches tall, and should be approved by GCPW.
Individual containers and bags may not weigh over 40 pounds.
Containers or bags should be placed close to the road near your mailbox no later than 7:30 am; however they should not obstruct the route of the postman..

Our Public Works department is also closed if road conditions are such as to put employees and the public in danger during the winter months.
On the days that there will be no trash collection, there will be an announcement on the Galax radio station 98.1 WBRF and the Marion radio station 93.9 WMEV by 7:00 am. Trash scheduled for pickup on these days will be picked up on the following week WEATHER PERMITTING.

The County provides service for yearly Large Item Pick Up. The time for this pick up is set by the Board of Supervisors. The schedule is advertised in the local newspapers two weeks prior to when the schedule begins and during the pickup period. Citizens who which to take advantage of the service should call our local Public Works Department after they see the ad in the paper. Public Works will request the following information:
The County will collect large household items within the Town of Independence.
Grayson County now has the equipment available to collect junk cars, automobile parts, old metal roofing and scrap iron. Please contact our office for details and instructions for these items. These items will be collected year round by appointment.
Items not acceptable for collection are: hazardous materials, land clearing debris, wire fencing, old fence posts, satellite dishes, wood from old buildings that have been torn down, roofing shingles, vinyl siding, and building materials such as plywood and sheetrock, etc. Public Works will pick up tires however, there is a limit of 10 tires per household and tires must be off the rim. Only automobile tires will be picked up.
